Voice-over work includes understanding a script and direction, checking pronunciation and delivering the required audio. Home recording may also include editing and file preparation. Assess preparation, communication, editing, pickups and usage rights rather than dividing a fee only by microphone time.

Build a reliable recording process
- Check room noise and reflections at the intended recording time.
- Keep microphone position and input level consistent; listen for clipping and breath noise.
- Retain unprocessed audio and check that cleanup has not damaged speech.
- Listen to the entire export and check playback on another suitable setup.
Equipment alone does not establish readiness. Prepare short purpose-specific demos and a quality sample that includes quiet sections. Check permission for demo scripts and never publish client recordings without authorization.

Hypothetical JPY example: ¥12,000 for recording and cleanup plus ¥3,000 for splitting files totals ¥15,000. One hour of preparation, one of recording and two of editing and review equals ¥3,750 per hour before expenses. Usage fees, platform costs, equipment and tax need separate treatment. This is not a market rate.
Agree how the voice may be used
Ordinary publication permission should not be treated as blanket permission for AI training, voice synthesis, replication or generation of new scripts. Specify permitted purposes, duration, onward supply and termination arrangements. Relevant legal issues depend on the transaction; the Agency for Cultural Affairs Q&A is a starting reference.
When will the script and pronunciation notes be final?
What media, advertising, duration and reuse are intended?
Does the request include AI training or synthetic voice use?
How are reading-error pickups distinguished from paid script changes?
What are the delivery specification, reviewer and acceptance date?
Apply and deliver systematically
- Submit a relevant demo and a precise statement of your scope.
- Confirm contract, payment, script and usage.
- Resolve pronunciation and direction early; agree a small paid sample where needed.
- Record, review and deliver, then retain acceptance and payment records.
Clients should provide the same information to each prospective performer to make quotes comparable.
