Internal links provide routes to other useful information on the same site. Prioritize a relevant next step, a descriptive label, and a working destination over a larger link count. Connect page roles, anchor wording, orphan-page checks, and post-change verification in one practical inventory.

Distinguish internal, outbound, and inbound links

An internal link leads within the same site. An outbound link leads to another site, while an inbound link is received from another page or site. When a report uses “backlink,” clarify whether it means external sites only or also includes links within the site.

Context and source of the reference

Google’s link best practices describe links as useful for discovery and understanding. They do not establish that adding one link guarantees indexing, search appearances, or a ranking gain. Discovery, fetching, indexing, and serving a result are different stages.

Map important pages to the reader’s next question

Identify important destinations and the situations in which a reader needs them. Importance can involve a prerequisite, a definition, or safe use, as well as commercial value. Linking every page directly from the home page is not the only reasonable structure.

Ranking definitions and checks

This is an illustrative mapping, not measured navigation data. Read each proposed destination to confirm that it answers the question. Google’s people-first guidance also offers a useful perspective: do not make people visit unnecessary pages solely to pursue search signals. More page views or a longer visit is not automatically a better experience.

Write descriptive anchors in context

An anchor should make the destination predictable in its sentence. A list of “click here” links loses useful meaning when read independently, even when surrounding paragraphs provide some context. Check the promise against the actual destination.

Identifies the question answered

These are wording examples, not instructions to create unrelated destinations. Use them only when the page matches. The anchor need not reproduce the entire page title, and different contexts can justify different natural wording for the same page. Avoid both vague labels and strings of keywords that interrupt the explanation.

Validate hrefs, language, and destination states

Check implementation as well as wording. A normal anchor element with an href pointing to the intended URL is the basic approach. An element that moves only through a click handler may look like a link without being a discoverable link in the same way. Visual appearance alone does not establish how it is implemented.

  1. Follow the link on the public page.
  2. Inspect whether its href identifies the intended URL.
  3. Confirm the destination language or explain an intentional exception.
  4. Check availability, redirects, and use of an outdated address.
  5. Escalate an unexpected canonical or publication state for investigation.
  6. Read the destination against the promise of the anchor.

If a route leads to another language or a signed-in application, make that understandable before the reader follows it. Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a reference for making important content reachable. Adding a contextual link does not by itself resolve noindex directives, canonical issues, or unavailable pages.

Audit orphan pages and unnecessary links with an inventory

An orphan candidate has no incoming links found within the investigation’s scope. A limited crawl does not establish that no link exists anywhere on the site. Reconcile the result with the CMS’s published inventory and other known URLs before diagnosing the page.

Change, owner, and recheck date

Consider six fictional pages: A is an overview, B an outline guide, C a writing guide, D an image guide, E a measurement guide, and F a calculation detail. A links to B, C, and E; B links to C; C links to D. F has no incoming link in this inventory. If E’s explanation needs the detailed calculation, a contextual E-to-F link is a reasonable addition. A does not need to link indiscriminately to every detail.

Record “E to F; understand the calculation; average calculation steps; relevant body paragraph,” then verify the destination and incoming link. Also remove unnecessary repetition where a long related-links block obscures the useful route. The goal is a coherent explanation and navigation path, not a maximum number of edges.

Separate navigation outcomes from search performance

After a change, verify that links work, retain the intended language, and reach the promised answer. Observe search performance separately under consistent conditions. Faster task completion can shorten a visit, so a lower time metric alone does not establish failure.

Google’s ranking-systems overview does not provide a formula that converts internal-link counts into a site-wide expertise score. Retain the change history and unresolved questions. The related topic-cluster guide helps assign page responsibilities, while the update guide explains how to evaluate a published change.
