In SEO editing, word salad describes copy whose words may sound plausible but do not form a useful explanation. This guide addresses an editorial problem. Instead of guessing how a passage was produced, check whether it answers the reader’s question with clear relationships and verifiable information.

What Word Salad Means in This Editing Guide

Including keywords is not the same as communicating meaning. “Customer value optimizes the future of SEO through the circulation of ROI” contains familiar terms, but does not explain who acts, what changes, or how the concepts relate.

Do not use the same label for every difficult sentence, typo, unsupported claim, or factual error. Separate those problems so the repair is clear. Ask whether a reader can explain the paragraph or carry out its intended task after reading it.

Separate Weak Writing from Spam-Policy Violations

Google’s spam policies address practices such as producing large amounts of low-value content primarily to manipulate rankings. Whether a person or AI generated it is not the only consideration.

Situation

First check

Avoid concluding

An unclear sentence

Subjects, definitions, context

Awkward wording automatically means a manual action

An unsupported guarantee

Original evidence and conditions

Fluent writing makes it true

Many search-manipulation pages

Purpose, distinct value, duplication

Human authorship makes it safe

An AI-assisted draft

Facts, sources, useful explanation

AI use alone violates policy

Record editorial defects separately from evidence of a policy violation. A single human review is also not a guarantee of accuracy.

Check Subjects, Evidence, and Logical Connections

Before polishing the phrasing, identify the missing information. This five-part rubric can be used on individual paragraphs.

Check

Question

Action when missing

Answer

Does it answer the heading’s question?

Write the answer first and remove tangents

Definitions

Do users, clicks, and outcomes keep the same meaning?

Define the metric and population

Evidence

Can the claim be checked against a source?

Verify or remove it

Numbers and scope

How many, what unit, when, and which audience?

Add the denominator, period, and scope

Logic

Does the conclusion follow from the observation?

Separate findings from hypotheses

Send uncertain claims back to an informed owner. Do not fill a gap with an invented “industry average” or turn a pending verification into a confident statement.

Turn Incoherent Copy into a Useful Explanation

The following examples are fictional and do not evaluate a real article or business. The repair adds an actor, a task, and the conditions needed to understand the task.

Example

Before

After

What changed

1

Customer value optimizes the future of SEO through the circulation of ROI.

The analyst checks profit and investment for the same period and states which costs the ROI calculation includes.

Replaces an undefined relationship with a specific check

2

Optimize form analysis so that the data successfully improves success.

Record form views, starts, and accepted submissions separately. Verify success conditions and duplicate events before calculating completion.

Names the observations, order, and success definition

The revised passage still needs factual checking where it makes a factual claim. Adding “this always increases sales” would create another unsupported promise. Read the paragraph against its heading to confirm that the useful answer is accessible.

Review Sources and Edits When Using AI

When AI assists with drafting or editing, open the sources and verify that they support the claims. Google’s guidance on generative AI content emphasizes accuracy, quality, and relevance. A credible-looking source URL is not evidence that someone has checked the page.

  1. Define the reader’s question and the intended scope.
  2. Match factual statements to verified primary material.
  3. Label company experience and fictional calculations accurately.
  4. Check names, dates, numbers, and feature conditions with the responsible owner.
  5. Review meaning, evidence, and the next step, then retain the published version.

Do not make an AI-detector score the pass/fail test for quality. Human writing can be wrong; AI-assisted writing can contain checkable information. Evaluate the content itself.

Investigate Content and Technical Issues Separately

A decline in impressions or a missing indexed URL does not establish that the writing is word salad. Separate retrieval, indexing, and serving in search, as described in Google’s explanation of Search.

Possible issue

Evidence

Work

Incoherent explanation

Copy, headings, reader question

Edit the passage

Factual error

Primary material, date, scope

Correct the claim

Policy concern

Purpose, page set, manual-action information

Establish evidence and affected scope

Technical or indexing issue

Directives, retrieval, canonical information

Review the relevant URLs

Demand or search-condition change

Comparable queries, URLs, and periods

Consider other explanations

Start with one paragraph, then determine whether the same issue appears elsewhere. Keep observed evidence and unknowns separate instead of assigning every search problem to the writing.
