For Japanese–Thai translation, first specify whether the source is Japanese or Thai. A per-character or per-word price is meaningful only with its counting basis, minimum charge and review scope. Send the same document and intended use to providers and compare the complete quote.

Ask how Thai words are segmented and counted. Byte counts depend on encoding and other factors; do not convert a fixed number of Japanese characters into a supposedly universal Thai byte count. For target-text billing, agree an estimate, cap and approval of increases.

The lower unit price is not necessarily the lower total. Align proofreading, corrections, certification, delivery and rush charges, and evaluate subject expertise and review rather than price alone.

Handle confidential and submission documents deliberately
For personal or unpublished information, agree sharing and confidentiality before providing documents. Ask about external AI, training use, storage, subcontractors and human review. Choose a process suited to the consequences of an error.
A supplier’s translation certificate is not automatically equivalent to notarization, official authentication or a particular institution’s translator requirement. Obtain the receiving institution’s requirements for format, credentials, originals and timing first, then provide them to the translator.
Acceptance checks
- Compare names, dates, numbers, currencies, units and product terms with the source.
- Check tables, notes and headings for omissions.
- Review line breaks, fonts and missing characters in the actual output.
- Consolidate questions with locations and retain the final corrected version.
